Saugeen Memorial Hospital Auxiliary

The Ladies Aid, precursor to the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, was formed on April 27th, 1948; less than a year after the hospital opened.  The original 39 members took responsibility for linens and organized social evenings to raise funds.  Today, the auxiliary has over 100 members, most still active in attending the monthly meetings, volunteering at the hospital and participating in the social and fundraising events. 

Our major fundraising events organized each year include a Geranium sale (on-going since 1977), Tag Days, a bake sale held the August holiday weekend (this event sells out within two hours of opening!), a golf tournament in September and a Christmas bazaar.  We also host the opening day of ''The Café" in Southampton, owned and operated by Armen Higgins, who donates the day's profits to the Auxiliary. Along with individual craft sales, special raffles and smaller events each year you get an idea of how busy our members are and how generous with their time and effort.

We have had our usual busy year with fundraising projects that have kept us on the go from May to November.  Our membership numbers 125 with active and non-active including of course, our few dedicated men.

The highlight of our year was our golf tournament held on September 6th.  It was our best tournament to date held at the Saugeen Golf Club and raised $26,000.  A lot of work for a few but worth the effort.

We now place volunteers in the Emergency department Monday to Friday.  With our large summer population the staff is extremely busy and an extra pair of hands is greatly appreciated.

Planning is well underway for our 2010 fundraising projects.

In the year 2008, we celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the Auxiliary by planting a garden in front of the hospital to commemorate the event.
