Gran Fondo Lake Huron
The Gran Fondo Lake Huron, presented by Bruce Power is a first class cycling event taking place in Saugeen Shores and surrounding area. The Gran Fondo takes participants along paved rural roads past mills, over bridges, along the Lake Huron shoreline, past wind farms, through the small towns of Southampton, Port Elgin, Tiverton and Underwood, Paisley, and Chippewa Saugeen First Nations 29. It is organized to accommodate 1000 participants with over 3000 in attendance both as fan support, and bystanders.
The Gran Fondo targets cyclists of all ages, from the family fun cyclists, up to centurion riders with an anticipated participation of 40% regional and 60% from the larger Ontario urban centres. We attract cyclists from all over Canada and the U.S as well as some from overseas.
This is a signature fundraiser for the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation designed to show off the beauty of the shoreline, the rural nature of our incredibly diversified farming community, the economic growth associated with energy (i.e. wind turbines and Bruce Power and its suppliers) and the cultural diversity of our region (a glorious mixture of Scottish and Irish settlement combined with the richness and heritage associated with First Nations in our area.
Last year this event raised over $184,000 for the purchase of medical equipment at our local and regional hospital. The goal for 2020 is to raise $225,000
